Local bands keep popping up on Pitchfork.
The new They Shoot Horses, Don’t They? album got a lukewarm review that sounds accurate (at least the part about their live show being exciting); Shapes and Sizes got a little mention at the bottom of some Sufjan news; and The Paper Cranes got a glowing, four-star track review.
The Paper Cranes is the most heartwarming and disconcerting, I think. This band appeared out of nowhere for me a few weeks ago, when they were supposed to play with (what else?) yet another modern rock band of my acquaintance.
The sample songs on their Myspace page actually made up for my allergic reaction to their pop-ups-and-no-clear-text website (which is really cute; I just seriously have a few web design allergies… I tell you this only to explain that their sample songs are really good!).
