Aloha and Ahoy!

Good news for Canadian copyright sanity

Six Canadian indie labels (Nettwerk, True North, others) left the Canadian Recording Industry Association over the CRIA’s excessive, American-style copyright obsessions. Michael Geist notes, on his always excellent Canadian media/law blog, that this is only the latest credibility problem for the CRIA. Don’t miss the links to previous thrilling moments such as when the CRIA’s own study validated file sharing.

We’re Creative Commons supporters here at the Aloha Misc. Media House; we’re happy if you like our work enough to share it with your friends. It’s encouraging to see more sections of the Canadian recording industry getting organized around artists’ interests, and recognizing that excessive copyright restrictions stifle creativity and hurt artists’ livelihoods.

“It has become increasingly clear over the past few months that CRIA’s position on several important music industry issues are not aligned with our best interests as independent recording companies” and “we do not feel that we can remain members [of CRIA] given CRIA’s decision to advocate solely on behalf of the four major foreign multi-national labels.”

The independent labels note that if CRIA’s proposals are implemented, they “would have a material negative effect on the future growth of Canadian independent music.”

The Canadian Independent Recording Artists Association (CIRAA) has a quick overview of Canadian recording associations and which acronym represents who. Their Flash interface doesn’t allow for proper linking, so click FAQ and then “Aren’t there other music industry associations?”

Membership to CIRAA is free and open to anyone who records music in Canada, so consider signing up.
