Hot tip for Victoria locals and tourists alike: the Free-B Movie Festival is showing free B-movies (straightforward, yes), every Saturday night this month at the band shell in Beacon Hill Park. Bring a blanket and the refreshments of your choice, for 9pm.
This past weekend’s screening confirmed that this is my favourite festival in Victoria. Number one!
Each screening is like an impromptu drive-in movie, which is pleasurable all by itself. But something about the combination of kid-safe PG ratings, weird movies, and the cover of darkness puts the audience in a very silly mood, every single time.
At Jason and the Argonauts the other night, a technical difficulty repeated a scene for us, and people spontaneously shouted out the answers to all Zeus’ questions during the replay. I discovered that most people crack up over dumb things like the way a king licks his teeth during a close-up.
The B movie festival gives me touchy-feely community feelings, but I can still bring a hip flask of whisky if I’m discreet. This is my definition of “civilized.”
Big thanks to the Victoria Independent Film and Video Festival folks for bringing us outdoor B movies for another year! All they ask in return is apparently to not litter and spread the word. Done and done!
