For the last several years, I’ve heard tales of a holiday tuba orchestra, but I always heard these tales a few days after the single, annual mass tuba concert. I keep trying to witness the majesty of fifty tubas playing together outdoors, and I keep failing. You know where this is going: This year I achieved.
After pancakes and a brilliant bit of half-baked conjuring by The Great Giffoni at Open Space, some friends and I made our way to Market Square for Tuba Christmas. I was expecting something silly, but it was actually quite beautiful!
Apparently there are similar events in other cities, too. It’s some kind of tuba advocacy movement (!).
The only other Tuba Christmas in Canada this year is in Vancouver, on December 17 at Granville Island Market, but you can use the master schedule to plan your tuba commuting if necessary.
