Aloha and Ahoy!

Chet music video screening

Emily flying during the Chet music video shoot

From Joey at Aaargh! Records:

It is with no small relief that we announce the release of the video for Chet’s “Don’t Let Your Cruel Heart Count Me In”, screening Monday August 13th at the Ministry of Casual Living (1442 Haultain st.). There will be an abundance of refreshments, popcorn & old movies following the screening. Starts at 8:45, screening at 9:30. Guests & family encouraged. The video will be viewable online at www.MySpace.com/AaarghRecords (among many other places) as of the 8:00pm August 13th.

Among other things, I know this video to contain footage of Emily Milliken flying through the air. I am excited to see the finished product! See also Bill Stuart’s photos from the video shoot.

Russian vampire movie is finally here!

Aloha, fine readers. We are home from many travels, mostly caught up on our work, and ready for an EPIC RUSSIAN VAMPIRE MOVIE SEQUEL! Yes, Day Watch is playing at the Capitol 6 this week (nightly, 6:30 and 9:10).

I hope Day Watch has the same spooky, animated subtitles as the earlier film, Night Watch. The fascinating and lovely subtitle typography is a good reason to see the film, even without the Russian sci-fi, epic good vs. evil, mythological inheritance cycles… trip.

This should tide me over until the free B-movies start up in Beacon Hill park in August. Weird monsters on the big screen have become a marker of summer for me, as much as the local berries overload.

Jun 7-9: Sarah at menstrual conference

Society for Menstrual Cycle Research logo

OK! I think this is the last event I need to post today!

I will be giving a talk about ideal vulvas—genital self-esteem, pornography, puberty, plastic surgery—at the 16th Biennial Meeting of the Society for Menstrual Cycle Research, at UBC in Vancouver.

This will be an updated version of a similar talk I gave last October, to introduce a screening of the movie Petals.

This is a multidisciplinary conference covering new science and health research on the menstrual-ovulatory cycle, as well as art, politics and “other” perspectives on women’s health, reproduction and sexuality. (I applied under “other.” Every conference should cover “other!”) Early registration deadline is May 1.

May 24-26: Sarah at Feminisms

Logo for Feminisms: Strengthening the Ties conference

The conference program has yet to be finalized, but as far as I know I’ll be presenting about DIY sex education at the Feminisms conference in Vancouver. This will be an updated version of a talk I gave in March.

Robin and Lola from the Anti-Violence Project at UVic (good people!) should be presenting about sex-positive ways to work against sexualized violence.

This is a conference hosted by the Vancouver Feminist Action Project, with the goal of sharing knowledge and experience between activists, academics, students and other feminist groups. It’s cheap—$15 each day if you register by April 30!
